Blind people are often unable to do basic things on the web because developers usually don’t follow accessibility standards.
Whereas most talks explain ways to make websites equally available regardless of disability, the experiences of real users are left behind. This speech aims to reveal how the inaccessible web affects the daily life of the blind and hundreds of thousands of users depending on assistive technology. With personal stories and practical examples, the audience will learn about the most frequent difficulties on websites this
community deals with. The participants will learn what the limits are to the speech software users, caused by lack of knowledge or inappropriate accessibility testing. Consequently, developers and designers will become aware of this issue and make sure their websites are technically accessible for people with disabilities. Participants will discover cases where automated accessibility solutions give false results. We will encourage them to engage disabled users in accessibility testing, fostering employment among this underrepresented group.
