More than three months Serbia has witnessed its most significant wave of protests in over two decades, primarily led by university students. The catalyst for these demonstrations was the tragic collapse of the Novi Sad railway station canopy on November 1, 2024, which resulted in 15 fatalities. The immediate aftermath of the Novi Sad tragedy saw citizens expressing grief and demanding accountability.
The student-led movement has articulated several key demands:
- Transparency: Release of all documents related to the reconstruction of the Novi Sad railway station.
- Accountability: Prosecution of individuals responsible for the collapse and those who attacked peaceful protesters.
- Judicial Independence: Ensuring the autonomy of the judiciary to conduct impartial investigations.
- Educational Investment: Increased funding for educational institutions and support for student initiatives.
To amplify their message, students have organized daily 15-minute silences at 11:52 AM—the exact time of the collapse—to honor the victims. They have also initiated marches, road blockades, and sit-ins at various universities
Among the general public, students are supported by cultural workers, teachers, professors, farmers, and numerous IT communities from Novi Sad and Belgrade.
